To celebrate the 20th anniversary of its iconic Ambition series, Faber-Castell approached Noto to create a limited edition featuring two new pen designs: Italic and Wood. The mission was to give the Ambition pen a contemporary facelift while preserving its distinctive DNA, and to design packaging that would do more than simply house the product. It needed to convey a sense of occasion, reflect the brand’s craftsmanship, and confidently set the limited edition apart. More than just a refresh, this became an opportunity to craft a strong and independent visual gesture, one that honors the brand’s heritage while marking a defining moment of celebration.
The challenge lay in achieving subtle transformation without compromising familiarity. The pen itself needed a modernized expression, refined details that would align with today’s aesthetic expectations, all while maintaining the timeless, classy look that defines the Ambition range. At the same time, the packaging had to stand on its own: a one-size-fits-all solution with embossed graphics and high-quality print finishes to ensure instant recognition. Beyond function, the packaging was expected to tell a story, an experience that would unfold from the moment of unboxing and extend into the store environment through a purposeful point-of-sale feature.
Instead of developing an entirely new packaging concept, the design approach focused on refining the existing structure. The aim was to enhance the overall experience through material choice, finish, and functional detailing, without overcomplicating production or straying from the brand’s visual language.
The packaging is designed to accommodate both pen editions using a shared base architecture, paired with modular elements that could adapt to the unique characteristics of each version. A key component is the interchangeable cover inlay, created to express the identity of each pen while visually standing apart from competing products. Its format allows for clear differentiation without requiring a separate structure for each edition.
Additionally, the internal pen holder was designed as a removable tray, offering continued use beyond the unboxing. This approach considered both the functional and emotional aspects of the user experience, placing particular emphasis on tactile quality and the pacing of the reveal.
The packaging system encompassed structure, graphic design, CMF development, and in-house prototyping. Each edition included tailored visual assets to communicate its specific narrative, all within a consistent layout framework.
Early mock-ups played a central role in aligning teams around the intended look and feel. These prototypes were used to test material behavior, folding structures, and finishing options, helping translate design decisions directly into manufacturable solutions.
By working closely with production constraints from the beginning, the process remained efficient and targeted. Prototypes were built with manufacturing logic in mind, significantly reducing back-and-forth during sampling. As a result, the transition from design to production was both fast and precise, with minimal need for adjustment.
The Ambition 20th Anniversary Limited Edition embodies the power of thoughtful design. It honors a classic while offering a confident, future-facing presence. Through collaboration, iteration, and attention to detail, the project demonstrates how even packaging can enrich a product’s legacy, transforming a moment of unboxing into a lasting experience.
